Planning a holiday to Bulgaria?

Bulgaria is a beautiful holiday destination that can be enjoyed all year round. The long sandy beaches along the black sea are a great place to relax during the summer months and throughout the winter Bulgaria offers some of the best budget ski resorts in Europe! All food, drink and internal transport within Bulgaria remains relatively cheap in comparison with Western Europe.

Best Bulgarian tourist exchange rates
Before you travel to Bulgaria we recommend that you buy your travel money. Bulgarian rules and regulations  permit foreigners to export and import up to 8,000 Bulgarian Lev without restriction.

Buy your Bulgarian currency online. Don’t use a bank when purchasing your holiday money. High street banks offer a far lower exchange rate than other leading UK travel money providers. If you convert your British pounds into Bulgarian Lev at your local high street bank you will end up feeling rather short changed! The same applies if you wait until you are at the airport to buy your foreign currency. Airport bureau de changes have absolutely no competition so can and will offer you a far poorer exchange rate than you could potentially get online.

Buying currency whilst in Bulgaria
Although I would always recommend purchasing your travel money before you go on holiday there are still many occasions where people find themselves running low on funds and need to withdrawal or convert more money into Bulgarian Lev. Buying or exchanging foreign currency in Bulgaria is pretty easy, there are many banks and licensed moneychangers throughout the country although both will charge roughly 4% fees and commission. The main banks in Bulgaria are the United Bulgarian Bank, Unicredit Bulbank, Bulgarian Post Bank, Raffeisen Bank and Biochim Commercial Bank. You can withdrawal money from ATMs that display the Visa or Mastercard sign. Do check that the Bulgarian notes you receive are not torn or grubby, if they are return them and ask for clean newer notes as some places will not accept the older notes.

In Bulgaria do be careful when using your credit card as some hotels will charge up to 5% on top of your bill for paying in this way. Credit cards are not as common or as widely accepted as in Western Europe. You will however be able to use your card wherever you see the American Express, Visa or MasterCard symbol displayed. Always check the bill before you hand over your credit card and make sure that you have enough money to make payment if you are in an establishment that adds on a surcharge.

Bulgarian Bank opening hours
