Czech Currency

by Victoria Copp on January 7, 2011

The official currency of the Czech Republic is the Czech Koruna which can be divided into 100 Hellers. The Czech currency international symbol is CZK. Czech Koruna banknotes are available in the following denominations; 5,000 Czech Koruna’s, 2,000 Czech Koruna’s, 1,000 Czech Koruna’s, 500 Czech Koruna’s, 200 Czech Koruna’s, 100 Czech Koruna’s, 50 Czech Koruna’s and 20 Czech Koruna’s.Czech coins are in the denominations of 50 Czech Koruna’s, 20 Czech Koruna’s, 10 Czech Koruna’s, 5 Czech Koruna’s, 2 Czech Koruna’s, 1 Czech Koruna and 50 Hellers.

Top tip – “It is wise to keep plenty of change and low value notes in your pocket whilst travelling around the Czech Republic. They are essential for paying for coffees and transport etc as some venues will not accept larger bank notes. If you have a number of larger bank notes most hotels will be happy to divide your funds into smaller denominations.”

Best tourist exchange rates
Before you travel to the Czech Republic we recommend that you buy your travel money. Visit our travel money tables to view the tourist exchange rates. We have trailed the high street and online to bring you the best bureau de change rates available.

Avoid using your bank to purchase your travel money as banks are renowned for offering a far lower exchange rate than other leading UK travel money providers. If you convert your British pounds into Czech Koruna at your local high street bank you will end up feeling rather short changed! The same applies if you wait until you are at the airport to buy your foreign currency. Airport bureau de changes have absolutely no competition so can and will offer you a far poorer exchange rate than you could potentially get online. Buy currency online now.

Buying currency whilst in the Czech Republic
We would always recommend purchasing your travel money before you go on holiday, however there are still many occasions where people find themselves running low on funds whilst on holiday and have to withdrawal or convert more money.

You can exchange money in a bank or use one of the many ATM machines throughout the Czech Republic to withdrawal more funds. Do be aware that whilst banks and ATM’s are plentiful in the larger cities including Prague they are far more scarce in smaller villages and towns. Think carefully and plan ahead if you are planning to visit one of these locations.

Don’t get ripped off
You can exchange currency at some of the larger hotels but they will charge 5-8% commission.  Avoid exchanging your money at one of the private exchange booths (Smenama) in Prague, these shops often lure tourists in with an attractive exchange rate which you will not get,  you will receive a far lower exchange rate or have to pay very high commission on your travel money.

In Prague debit and credit cards can be used in ATMs, airports, large hotels, restaurants and shops throughout the city wherever the  Visa or MasterCard symbol is displayed.
