The currency of Egypt is the Egyptian pound which is divided in 100 Piastres. On every Egyptian bank note you will find one side is in Arabic and the other is in English. The Arabic side will generally have a picture of a mosque whilst the side of the bank note in English will display ancient Egyptian figures or monuments.
Egyptian pound (EGP)bank notes are available in the following denominations, 100 Egyptian pounds, 50 Egyptian pounds, 20 Egyptian pounds, 10 Egyptian pounds, 5 Egyptian pounds, 1 Egyptian pound, 50 Piastres notes and 25 Piastres notes. Egyptian coins are in denominations of 20 Piastres, 10 Piastres and 5 Piastres.
Planning a holiday to Eygpt?
Egypt is a great value for money holiday destination thanks to the low cost of holidays and favourable exchange rate. The cost, culture, scenery and superb weather are enticing more and more Brit’s each year to choose Egypt as their preferred holiday destination.
“A top tip to remember is the smaller the bank note the smaller the denomination in Egypt!”
In Egypt there is a shortage of small change and notes, it is therefore vital to stockpile if you can 50 Piastres, 1 Egyptian pound, 5 Egyptian pound and 10 Egyptian pound notes for tips, taxi fares and for buying other small items. When travelling in Egypt you will find that many shops and stalls will not accept large Egyptian pound notes as payment for small goods. Break larger notes in well established hotels and shops.

Before you travel to Egypt it is advisable that you buy your travel money. Visit our tourist exchange rate table to find out who is offering the best foreign exchange rate. Do not use the bank when buying holiday money. As shown in the Compare Currency travel money table banks offer a far lower exchange rate compared to other leading UK travel money providers such as Travelex and Ice PLC. If you convert your British pounds into Egyptian pounds at your local bank you will end feeling rather short changed! The same can be assumed if you buy your foreign currency from the airport. Airport bureau de changes have absolutely no competition so will offer you an uncompetitive lower exchange rate than you could potentially buy online. Buy currency online now.
Buying foreign currency whilst in Egypt
Although I would always recommend purchasing your travel money before you go on holiday there are many occasions where you may find yourself running low on cash whilst abroad and will need to purchase more Egyptian pounds. Do not use an unauthorized currency dealer in Eygpt as this is against the law in eygpt!
Money can be exchanged in foreign exchange bureaus, Egyptian banks and in some hotels. You will that the exchange rate offered will not vary significantly between each provider. Debit and credit cards with Visa, MasterCard, Cirrus or Plus Cards can be used in the majority of ATM machines in tourist friendly cities such as Cairo, Luxor, Alexandria, Sharm el-Sheikh and Hurghada. The most reliable bank ATMs are at Banque Misr, The National bank of Egypt, HSBC, CIB and the Egyptian American Bank (EAB).
You can use a debit or credit card to pay for goods and services in foreign friendly tourist hotels, shops and restaurants, however do remember that away from the main tourist destinations the chance of you being able to use your card for payment is far less likely and in remote areas impossible. If you are planning to make a payment in Egypt on your debit or credit card find out if you will be charged a percentage of the sale cost for making payment in this way. Certain establishments can charge anywhere between 3%-10% on top of a transaction.
Bank opening hours
In Egypt banks are 8.30am – 2pm daily, closed Fridays, Saturdays and most holidays.
