What currency is used in Mauritius?

by Victoria Copp on April 26, 2011

The currency of Mauritius is the Mauritius Rupee. If you are planning a relaxing luxurious holiday in Mauritius you should buy your travel money online before you travel in order to get the best exchange rate. Money saved on achieving better exchange rates can be spent on your trip away. Most online providers do not charge a commission fee and orders over a specific amount are available with free delivery. (Use the Compare Currency travel money table to view home delivery fees.)

Mauritius is an extremely popular holiday destination for honeymoons and for other couples who want to get away from it all and spend a week or two relaxing on one of the beautiful beach resorts where you are guaranteed beautiful weather and crystal clear waters. Although the majority Mauritian holidays booked by UK travellers are all-inclusive it is still always advisable to take some local Mauritian currency with you to pay for excursions and gifts whilst on the island.

Mauritian Rupees are the currency of Mauritius. The rupee is made up of smaller denominations called cents. 100 cents equals 1 Mauritian rupee.  Mauritian rupee banknotes are available in the following denominations; 1,000 Mauritian Rupees, 500 Mauritian Rupees, 200 Mauritian Rupees, 100 Mauritian Rupees, 50 Mauritian Rupees and 25 Mauritian Rupees. Mauritian coins are in the denominations of 10 Mauritian Rupees, 5 Mauritian Rupees, 1 Mauritian Rupee, 50 Cents, 20 Cents and 5 Cents.

Best Mauritian Rupee Exchange Rates
We would recommend that before your holiday in Mauritius you buy your travel money. This will enable you to achieve the best Mauritius rupee exchange rate. Visit the Compare Currency tourist exchange rate table to find the best currency providers online. We trail the high street and online to bring you information on the best exchange rates available.  Within our currency comparison tables we have compared the five most popular tourist currencies to show you who is offering the best exchange rates. Simply click on the buy now button of your preferred currency provider to find the Mauritius exchange rate.

If you leave buying your Mauritian rupees until the airport you will find yourself feeling rather short changed. Airport Bureau de changes are renown for offering poor uncompetitive exchange rates.

Buying currency whilst in Mauritius
Although we recommend buying your travel money before your holiday to Mauritius we are aware that sometimes you will find yourself running low on funds whilst abroad. You can exchange money at the major banks, large hotels and exchange bureaus within Mauritius. You will find that the exchange bureaus generally offer a slightly better exchange rate but there is little difference in it. The hotels tend to offer the poorest exchange rates and charge a commission for converting your currency, but obviously this will vary from one hotel to the next. Please remember to take your passport when you go to exchange money.

There are plenty of ATM machines throughout the island where you can withdrawal local currency. ATMs are generally located at the banks, airports, some larger supermarkets and shopping centres. You will be able to use your card in any machine that displays either the VISA or MasterCard sign (depending on what type of card you have).

You can use your credit or debit card to pay for goods and meals in most hotels, restaurants and tourist shops within the popular tourist areas. Always check with the shop or restaurant first to be on the safe side. If you are planning to visit smaller more remote destinations make sure you carry enough cash for the purpose of your trip.
