Winter Holidays

by Victoria Copp on January 12, 2010

With the Euro remaining strong over the past couple of months and with no signs of it weakening significantly against the pound, British holiday makers would be wise to look further afield for their winter sun or ski breaks.

Winter Sun

Turkey and Egypt are proving popular destinations for winter sun this year as they offer a cheaper alternative to the Euro Zone. For those who are able to travel slightly further Jamaica, Thailand and South Africa also offer great winter sun holidays.

Ski Breaks

The popular destinations of Italy and France are proving too expensive this season for many British skiers. The overall cost of a skiing holiday is 32% more today than two years ago thanks to the weakened pound. Many holidaymakers are opting to travel to Eastern Europe where they can get a better overall feeling of value for money.

Simple Tips on how to get the best deal

If you do prefer to travel within the Euro zone, check out our top tips on saving money and getting the best deal:

  • Book at All-inclusive holiday – This means that you will spend much less whilst on holiday as most of your drinks and food will be included in the initial cost paid in sterling before you depart.
  • Don’t be afraid to haggle with your travel agent. Times are hard for all companies at present and they want your business! Ask them for a deal.
  • Compare exchange rates and commission fees for your travel money. Check out our comparison table to see what rates some of the leading providers are offering.
  • Don’t be afraid to buy your travel money online. This can end up saving you time and money compared to purchasing it on the high street.
  • Find out from the travel company the cheapest method of payment for your holiday. Some firms will charge a fee for payments on credit or debit cards.
  • Get adequate travel insurance – Don’t get caught short whilst away.
  • Take a prepaid currency card on holiday with you. You convert your funds before you leave making you less vulnerable to exchange rate movements and can only spend what is on the card which will allow you to budget. Cash is simply loaded on to the cards and can be spent in hotels, restaurants, and shops and withdrawn from ATM’s.
